CALL FOR UNDERWRITERS

For PHASE VI PUBLIC ART IN THE WOODLANDS

The vision of George Mitchell, founder of The Woodlands, and the mission of The Woodlands Arts Council (TWAC) is to promote public art and the creative economy in our beautiful community. The Woodlands Arts Council is the only organization in The Woodlands to offer an opportunity to become part of the public art heritage of The Woodlands! In partnership with The Woodlands Township, TWAC has commissioned and installed thirty art benches along The Woodlands Waterway and in Hughes Landing.

Underwriters are fundamental partners in the two-year process of expanding the Public Art throughout The Woodlands Arts District. Underwriters can be individuals, groups, families, organizations, or local businesses.

WHAT DOES AN UNDERWRITER DO:

  1. Commit to the investment to sponsor a new piece of Public Art
  2. Review and select one of the proposed locations
  3. Complete Questionnaire pertaining to elements of design, location and what you hope to be represented in the design
  4. Complete agreement and sponsorship payment
  5. Review three semi-final designs to select one for final Public Art creation

Why Public Art:

  • Public Art may commemorate a loved one
  • Public Art may add color, fun or an interactive experience
  • Public Art may reflect the natural surroundings of forest, wildlife, and water
  • Public Art may be philosophic or symbolic and stimulate conversation

HOW THE PROCESS WORKS:

  1. Underwriters are secured for select locations
  2. Call for Entry goes out to local, national, and international artists
  3. Artists submit original preliminary designs of their interpretation for the Underwriters vision
  4. Public Art Committee juries the proposed designs and selects three semi-finalists for each location based on alignment with Underwriters vision as well as feasibility of execution
  5. The three semi-final designs are submitted to the Underwriters for final selection
  6. Final Public Art design is created and delivered
  7. Public Art is installed and unveiled in Fall of 2024

Key Points:

  • Underwrite an Art Bench $18,000-$25,000
  • Your gift qualifies as a charitable tax-deductible contribution
  • Installation is planned for October 2024
  • Note: There is currently a waitlist for Phase VI art benches.
