An Exhibition of Work by Robert L. Straight
The distinction between art and craft is often unclear. Traditionally, craft involved creating functional items through skill and mastery, while art served as an early means of recording information, characterized by expertise, emotion, and expression. However, in contemporary times, we witness a beautiful fusion of both art and craft.
Robert L. Straight exemplifies remarkable skills, talents, and artistry. He experiments with various media, skillfully integrating diverse components to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that blend artistry with craftsmanship. Straight has successfully crafted objects that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Now in his 82nd year, he remains dedicated to his studies at Glassell School of Art, where he earned his MFA in 2016. For over 50 years, he has devoted at least five hours a day to his industrial studio.
“This exhibition explores the intersection of art and craft. It’s always thrilling to see what Robert L. Straight produces, as he creates art with exceptional craftsmanship,” remarked exhibition curator Annette Palmer. “The Fine Art of Craft” showcases both thoughtful and whimsical creations, including turned wood inlaid with vibrant elements, fused glass, and metalworks, alongside playful silkscreen prints and lithographs—truly a testament to the power of imagination.
